10 Questions to Ask a REALTOR Before You Hire Him

The sale of real estate can be a complicated process. To get us started on the right foot there are a number of things that we need to know about each other and about the way we’re going to work together. To help you make a quality hiring decision, I’ve compiled a list of 10 of the best questions to ask a REALTORĀ® you’re considering hiring:

  1. Do you have another job besides real estate?

    It can be difficult enough keeping up with market changes, rules, and all the marketing when you spend your full day at it. Make sure you know before you hire an agent who’s not fully committed to their profession.

  2. What is your experience in representing buyers/sellers?

    This is a much meatier question than “how long have you been in business?” Somebody in their first year could be quite proficient while someone with their license 20 years might still be behind the times. Get right to the real question.

  3. May I call a few past clients for references?

    Obviously I’m going to put you in touch with my clients who will have the best things to say about me. Still, you should hear directly from them what they liked or not about their transaction.

  4. What do you think of Open Houses?

    Ask yourself too. What do you think of Open Houses?

  5. What are the top 5 things you need me to do?

    Another one that goes both ways. There may be more or less, but about 5 gets to the point.

  6. How do the different types of financing affect the transaction?

    The worst part of a sale are the surprises. Let’s find out as much as we can up front.

  7. Sometimes houses appraise for less than the contracted price. What do we do then?

    It may not be realistic to cover every scenario, but again it is important to eliminate surprises where possible.

  8. SELLERS – Should I have a home inspection done prior to listing?

    Usually that is a buyer’s cost, but there could be good reasons to get an inspection ahead of time.

  9. Who will be handling my questions, showings, and contract negotiations? Do you have an assistant or transaction coordinator?

    You want to know how available he will be to you.

  10. Tell me what you have planned to earn the commission I will be paying.

    By the time you get this answered it should be clear to you who the best hire is!
